Natural Remedies For Asthma
Natural asthma remedies can be effective in dealing with the condition, but many of them are not remedies so much as preventative measures. Environmental control is a big part of dealing with asthma, and will go a long way towards helping bring it under control.
For years, asthma treatments have been reactive measures to symptoms of an acute asthma attack. Prevention was a minor part of it, if dealt with at all.
Over the last 25 or so years, the reactions that lead to an asthma attack have become better understood. It has been realized that asthma is not just sitting there idly, waiting to flare up. It is more like diabetes - a chronic health condition that can be affected by your lifestyle, environment and habits.
Asthma can be triggered or made worse by certain things in the air and around your home. Therefore, one of the key factors in treating it is to control these irritants. Rather than inhaling crushed garlic, drinking onion tea, or some other folk remedy, here are some simply home remedies that will actually work.
- Don't smoke and don't let others smoke in your home. Smoking is one of the most common irritants that can cause an asthma attack.
- Don't burn wood fireplaces or stoves, as again the resulting smoke can cause an attack.
- Watch what kind of sprays you use. Anything that gets sprayed in the air can end up being breathed into your lungs. Air fresheners, cleaners and perfumes can all cause problems.
- Watch for mold. Mold is another common allergen that can contribute to asthma. Some of the ways you can control mold in your home include:
- wipe all bathroom surfaces with bleach at least weekly
- avoid using a humidifier as they can encourage mold growth
- use a dehumidifier in damp areas like basements
- install a fan or ventilator in the bathroom
- Control dust in your home. Dust mites are a common allergen - keeping dust down will avoid them. And this isn't just a matter of dusting regularly - you should also:
- use polyester filled comforters, pillows and mattresses
- use mite-proof covers on pillows and mattresses
- wash your bedding in HOT water (at least 130 degrees) weekly
- use HEPA filters in your vacuum and air conditioner
Two other home remedies for asthma that are believed to be effective are vitamin B6 and caffeine. B6 supplements appear to lower the severity of symptoms, and caffeine appears to also have a calming effect.
You should always check with your doctor, however, to get their informed opinion. They will be able to give you a more complete diagnosis and suggest the best treatment program and asthma supplies for your particular situation.
